Tides of Life

Throughout my life I have been an observer, observing people, behaviour and occurrences. I have always been interested in the mechanics of the way this universe operates and of life forms within it. I noticed that the operation of life which is all that we can perceive has a rhythm to it. Such as the rise and fall off a wave, the blossom of a flower in spring and the fall of it in winter. Sunrise and sunset, birth and death, down to our moods, female menstrual cycle and experiences in life.

I became curious as to the reason for this, so I did some research and stumbled upon a name called hermeticism which caught my attention. As I looked further, this is an ancient Egyptian philosophy originated by Hermes known back then for his divine wisdom, his teachings passed on from mouth to ear across lands and formed the basis of the many religions and philosophy seen today. The Kybalion is a book I read that expresses the hermetic teachings from Hermes which are based on seven principles.

The principle of Rhythm is what helped me to understand this great phenomenon I was curious about. The principle of Rhythm is a law that manifests in all aspects of physical life, mental and spiritual planes in which there is constant motion to and from like a pendulum between one to the other. There is nothing that escapes this rhythmic swing including our moods and feelings which is evident all the time as we find ourselves unable to maintain a certain feeling like excitement or joy constantly. We experience situations which causes us to feel happy one minute then sad the other and our moods can shift from frustration to contentment, irritation to calmness which is all caused by this rhythmic swing. Much like gravity, it affects us all without selection, but by becoming conscious of it instead of moving along with it we can use our will to ground ourselves in the mood or feelings we want to be in and not react to the effects of the opposite swing.

Knowing that this is just a law apart of life can help us understand why we have these different feelings and moods coming and going all the time. It can allow us to feel more compassion for ourselves and others by not casting blame or being a victim. Picture these mental tides we experience like waves high and low, seasons coming and going, it's what happens to us, but it is not us. Don't allow yourself to become what you are feeling or experiencing, rise above its effects.
